The best ways to hide social media feeds on Mac
There are two kinds of tool: ones that hide the feed and leave the site usable, and ones that block the whole site. Here's what's available for Safari on a Mac in 2026, and what each is good for.
Hide the feed, keep the site
- Burnfeed A Safari extension for Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, LinkedIn and Reddit, part by part, with a quote where the feed was and timed pauses. $4.99 once.
- SocialFocus A Safari extension that hides parts of YouTube, Facebook, X, Instagram, Reddit, LinkedIn and Gmail, on Mac, iPhone and iPad. $4.99, with Pro in-app purchases.
- Scrolless Hides feeds on Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, Facebook, X, LinkedIn and more, with custom rules. Free download, $4.99 one-time unlock; needs a recent macOS.
- #blockit Hides Shorts, Reels and feeds on the same six sites and can block whole URLs. Subscription.
Do it yourself
- AdGuard Mini A free Safari content blocker for Mac whose element picker and user rules can hide any part of a page, if you write and maintain the rules yourself.
- Safari's Hide Distracting Items Built into Safari on macOS 15 and later: click an element to hide it. Apple notes it doesn't permanently hide items that update often, like feeds.
Block the whole site
- Screen Time Built into macOS: daily limits for websites in Safari, or block sites outright. All or nothing per site.
- Freedom Blocks sites and apps across Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android on a schedule. Free tier and subscription.
- one sec Adds a pause before a distracting app or site opens, rather than hiding anything. Subscription or lifetime.
How to choose
If you still need the site for messages, search or a video you came for, hide the feed instead of blocking the site; blocks tend to get switched off. If a site is pure distraction for you, a blocker or Screen Time is simpler. And if you want to tinker, a content blocker with your own rules is free, but sites change their layouts and the rules need upkeep.
